Toronto is known for generating outstanding musicians. The first few artists that come to mind are probably, Shawn Mendes, Pressa, Tory Lanez, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, and of course Drake. Recently, the new generation has brought a promising new star: Luna Elle.
The RnB singer was born in Mississauga, Ontario with Ghanaian roots. Although she is only 17 years old, her music already got the blessing of Hall-of-Fame Basketball Player Shaq, which isn’t something a lot of artists can brag about. In 2021, Elle published her very first single “True Love”. Soon after, she gained the recognition and confidence to pursue a profession and is now signed to Hot Freestyle Records.
Luna Elle recently released her debut EP L.O.V.E. The acronym standing for Loss Of Valuable Energy. Elle claims in a Complex Interview that she is not yet cynical about romantic love, but like a genuine artist, she draws on the experiences of others around her to write from a relatable perspective. Most of her stories and lyrics come from situations her older sister and her friends lived and been through.
Elle draws most of her inspiration from 90s RnB artists such as Aaliyah, Brandy and Sade. However her biggest inspiration would be The Queen herself, Beyonce. Elle has been singing since she was a little girl and recalls fond memories of her mother and sister playing old-school R&B. "I've always preferred R&B or music with stronger emotional overtones," she claimed.
When asked about her musical future she said “I feel like I found my path. […]I want to experiment more with Afrobeats.” She added “obviously, I do love Afrobeats, Ghana loves Afrobeats, so I think it has a bit of influence, but for the most part I think I found my own path”. Elle was also asked if she was influenced by her parents or if she found her own way into music.
Even though she's still a teenager, her music is mature. Elle’s vocal range shows best in songs like “Just Friends”, “Too Deep” and “Because Of You”. The hard hitting 808s and bassline matched well with her ability to switch from a low voice to a higher pitch is simply amazing. Luna Elle shows that she's not just great with RnB, but with something much more up beat. “Perfect by Design” goes to show that Luna and a producer like Kaytranada would be a fool proof match on a song; Elle really shows her talent and versatility.
I'm super excited for what the future holds for Luna Elle. I am sure we will hear plenty more over time.
